Learn the ins-and-outs

Find out about the politics of your department from other graduate students. Don't focus on the gossip, but rather the facts. Other students can tell you their experiences with certain classes, what it's like to write paper for a particular professor, with whom to take classes, who to watch out for, and with whom to work closely. Find out who can be helpful to you while working on your degree. Trust your own perceptions and feelings.
